About Vanessa

Curator's notes
  • Slim, 173 cm
  • Hazel eyes; sandy brown hair with balayage, worn long
  • Twenty-five, sweet and curious
  • Languages, fragrance collecting, cycling
  • Lives in Paddington

Vanessa asks the second question, the one most people forget. Not just where you are from, but what you miss about it; not just what you do, but which part of it you would keep if you could only keep one. It is a quiet form of curiosity, and it makes an evening with her feel unusually personal.

She is twenty-five, slim and 173 cm tall; balayage softens her long, sandy brown hair, and her hazel eyes turn amber by lamplight. Vanessa lives in Paddington and dresses in understated coastal chic: striped knits, wide trousers, a trench coat, and trainers she swaps for heels at the door.

Languages are her longest-running hobby. She collects small phrases the way other people collect postcards and will ask you to teach her one word in any language you know. Fragrance is a gentler collection, a short shelf of bottles each tied to a place she has visited. Cycling is how she sees London; she rides the long way round, along the canal or through the parks. Relaxed and sweet-natured, she speaks English with a gentle, unhurried warmth.

Her Earls Court evening often starts with a walk through Brompton Cemetery just before the gates close, a strange and beautiful Victorian landscape of angels, ivy and long avenues that she loves more than any park. From there, supper somewhere nearby on Old Brompton Road, and then a relaxed return to your hotel, where she is as happy to talk until the agreed hour as to sit comfortably in silence.

Evenings around Earls Court are where she is most often requested, and one message via the booking page reserves her.

An evening with Vanessa

Vanessa's ideal evening begins at dusk among the long avenues of Brompton Cemetery, where the domed chapel catches the last light and the ivy looks almost silver. She walks slowly, reads the names on the older stones and asks about the places that shaped you, listening to the answers as though she might visit them next spring.

Supper is on Old Brompton Road, somewhere friendly where she can practise saying thank you in whatever language the waiter speaks. She orders something she cannot pronounce and laughs when she tries. Back at your hotel she is relaxed and sweet, leaning into the conversation rather than the cushions, and when the evening ends she leaves a new word on the hotel notepad, in the language you taught her.

Three questions · 03

In Vanessa's words

Three, very slowly. I am far better at ordering coffee than holding a conversation, but I am getting braver every month.

Along the canal from Little Venice, then anywhere quiet. I always take the long way round, because the short way never has anything interesting on it.

Because it is the calmest place in west London. Nobody rushes, the trees are enormous, and every path has a story.
