A good dinner date has three movements, and each wants its own setting. What remains is for coffee, a walk back past the white stucco terraces and a nightcap wherever you are staying. If the kitchen runs slowly or the conversation is too good to interrupt, the plan bends to suit; four hours need not be divided evenly to be well spent.
The district rewards a little planning. Bibendum, beneath the stained glass of Michelin House on the Fulham Road, suits a genuine occasion. Launceston Place, on a residential street a few minutes from Gloucester Road, is small and lit low. Clarke's on Kensington Church Street changes its menu with the market and keeps its dining room pleasantly calm. In Chelsea, Daphne's on Draycott Avenue and Medlar on the King's Road both have rooms where two people can hear each other without leaning in. Closer to the park, Min Jiang, high up inside the Royal Garden Hotel, looks straight over Kensington Gardens.
None of these restaurants has any arrangement with us. They are simply good places to eat, and each is well within the zone where her travel costs you nothing.

If you would rather she chose, describe what you like to eat and whether the evening marks a celebration or a quiet night, and the desk will send back a suggestion or two. Mention any dress code as well. For a first dinner together, a table against a wall or tucked into a corner usually works better than one in the middle of the floor, because conversation comes more easily when neither of you feels on display. Most restaurants in the district will note that request if it is made at the time of booking.
She joins your table as a guest, not as entertainment. Expect conversation that follows your lead, a view on the wine if you ask for one, and no phone resting beside the bread basket.
